Who is Nino Acosta?

Nino Acosta has been dancing since age three in his native home of the Dominican Republic and studied Afro-Cuban Folklore there. He is the son of a Professional dancer and a Dominican singer. His love and passion for salsa took him to New York in 1989 where he trained under the tutelage of New York Salsa King. A year later he won his first Salsa Championship and furthered his dance training by moving to Cuba to learn Cuban style salsa in the sizzling city of Havana. In 1992 Nino won his second Salsa Championship and moved to Canada to study International Business at McGill University where he founded The McGill's Salsa Club. After completing his degree, Nino moved to Calgary in 1996 and founded the Latin Corner Dance Studio, introducing L.A. and New York style salsa to the city. He established Calgary s first performing salsa group, which was formed mainly for charitable purposes.

Nino and his team of dancers have trained numerous actors and dancers at his Latin Corner Dance Studio. In 2006 Nino Acosta created a new way of training soccer player with a dance footwork that he created and made the front page of Calgary Herald and the World News with his sensational Salsa Soccer (title of article: “Salsa like Ronaldo”), giving him and his dance studio a worldwide recognition for his creative and Fun form of training children in the game of Soccer.

In 2002 Nino developed a fantastic and fun form of exercise called Latin Aerobics , which integrates all types of Latin dance styles into an excellent cardio-workout. He created Children’s Salsa Soccer and runs summer camps for kids. He produced Canada’s first instructional video to include more than one dance style: Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and Bachata. He also wrote and directed Calgary’ s first Latino play, which was performed in 2004. He has appeared in commercials and movies and he host his own television show call "NOS FUIMOS" www.nosfuimostv.com He also has performed in Dubai, Madrid, Bologna, Frankfurt and several resort areas in Mexico. In 2006 Nino opened a dance studio in Dubai and imports exotic dancewear and his own brand of professional-style dance shoes from Dubai and Europe.

Nino’s charity work in Calgary includes: the United Way Show and workshop, Children’s Cancer Hospital fundraiser, the Amnesty International Show, the Women’s Shelter’s Dance as Fast as They Can fundraiser, the Red Cross, raising awareness of the Obesity Programs in Calgary, the Calgary Immigrant s Aid Society, and most recently, the Extravadanza Fashion Show to raise money for Hall “Child and Family Services” and of course the Flying Doctors of Canada (www.flyingdoctors.ca) He was Nominated in 2006 in Calgary Inmigrant of the Year and in 2008 He was consider one of the 30 most influencial Hispanic in Canada by the Toronto Hispanic Nomination. This year Nino Acosta is working in his documentary "THE BACHATA CHRONICLES" and some other charities in Canada.
